Notes on the Crazy, the

Mundane, and the Caprine.

A collection of short, casual dispatches from daily life. No heavy debates or deep analysis here. Just the view from my office window into life’s small absurdities and the antics of my mob of goats.

Writing from the

Places Life Takes Us

Baldric’s essays emerge from a life shaped by many landscapes—from urban planning and the rhythms of farm life to faith, literature, and the quiet discipline of observation.
These writings are an attempt to pause and pay attention: to the ordinary, the overlooked, and the moments that often pass without recognition. They explore the tension between the world we build and the world we inherit, between ambition and simplicity, and between searching for answers and learning to live with questions.

Blogs for the

Journey Within.

Life gets too loud, too serious, and far too complicated. These blogs are a deliberate pause. It is a view from my office for the simple things, life’s small absurdities, and the daily antics of dairy goats. Pull up a chair and leave the heavy stuff at the door. Let’s take a breather.

Having a Beer with Bigfoot

Lately, I’ve been looking out my window and thinking about El Niño. While we’ve been getting hit with steady rain, folks a few states east and west of us are baking under scorching heat domes. Amazing how one warm patch of ocean thousands of miles away manage to completely rewrite the weather rules. I can say it’s “amazing” because I am not sweating buckets.

Nature

The Paddock War

Sun’s beating down, sweat’s itching, just wanted five minutes of peace. Then the buzzing started. A wasp was nearby, hovering with that lazy, arrogant drift they do. Showing off. “Look at me!” kind of thing. I took off my hat to swat it. It was a black mud wasp, about half an inch long, with a Barbie-doll waist. I timed it. Waited and gave it a good smack. Felt the solid thwack against the dirt.

Bonnets, Bogs & the Border-Crossing

Two weeks before the sun captures most of the day, the sky outside my office window shows an atmosphere of collapsing chaos. The fishing boat stays unhitched; the lakes are too muddy with yesterday’s run-off and my to-do is creeping closer to page three.

Spring and Stress are Everywhere

The Hallmark Channel runs a massive, multi-week series of movies this time of year called “Spring into Love.” Their promotional trailers and network voiceovers constantly use variations of the phrase: “It’s Spring, and love is everywhere.” After watching one of those commercials, I immediately turned off the television  to see MayBelle.

Writer Left Out in the Cold

I found myself locked in a dance of shadows and hay, dodging a head-butt from a creature who views my coat pockets as her personal pantry. It’s a losing battle; I always surrender to the mob. But as I sat on the bench in my paddock getting bounced around by a mob of goats and watching MayBelle toss one after the other off the bench to get to my pockets; I was thinking about my third novel.

Potted Plants & Secret Bathrooms

My daughter use to set me out like a potted plant in the middle of the mall’s chaos while she and her friends went shopping. She was always careful to pick a spot by the coffee stand, giving me a hug and shouting “Love you!” over her shoulder as she vanished into the crowd.

Finding the Sacred in Ordinary Life

There are moments when the simplest things become the most profound—a quiet morning, honest work, an open field, or a few words shared between friends. This essay explores the places where the sacred quietly reveals itself within the ordinary rhythms of life.
